Launching Lives of Purpose

Notre Dame de Namur University has long been recognized for the excellence of our programs in education. Presently, the NDNU education department offers two education specialist credentials: mild/moderate support needs/extensive support needs. Both provide the option to add the master of arts in special education. Many of our alumni are active teachers and administrators in San Mateo County and throughout the peninsula. Personalized attention and individualized advising for students, field-oriented programs, and successful placement of credential graduates have characterized the teacher education program since its inception in 1953.

Advanced Special Ed Credentials

NDNU’s Education Specialist Credential with a Master of Arts in Special Education prepares students to teach in special education settings in public and private schools, K-12 and up to age 22. Mild/Moderate credential holders teach students in resource specialist programs, special day classes for learning disabilities, and some full inclusion students. Moderate/Severe credential holders will be able to teach students whose needs are more severe.

Distinctions of the
NDNU M.A. SPED

Students complete the 44-unit credential and add the MA in Special Education by taking one 3-unit capstone course.


General education teachers can add the special education credential with a master’s degree by taking 30 units.

  • Elementary mathematics; elementary science; elementary social science; curriculum modifications: mild/moderate
  • Curriculum and instruction courses: moderate/severe
  • Teaching students with motor, sensory, & health needs; core curriculum access for students with severe disabilities; curriculum modifications: moderate/severe

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

  • Verification of meeting California basic educational skills requirements or submission of transcripts for review by Credential Analyst
  • Verification of meeting California subject matter requirement or submission of transcripts for review by Credential Analyst
  • Statement of Intent describing your interest, experience, link to our mission, qualifies you bring to the program

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • CTC Certificate of Clearance (fingerprint clearance)
  • Provide a copy of negative tb test result within last 2 years
  • Provide verification of meeting the U.S. Constitution requirement by exam, course work, or CSU degree
  • Complete CPR training for infant, child, and adult
  • Personal interview with program director
